The mahogany-accented penthouse and owners' suites have large verandas, heavy teak furniture, and butler service.
NORWEGIAN SKY
Norwegian Cruise Line
Capacity: 2002
Completed in 1999, carries 2002 passengers at double occupancy, and international crew of 850. She is Bahamian-registered, 853 ft long and cruises at 23 knots.
During the early part of
the year, The Sky cruises weekly from Miami on alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises calling either at Nassau, San Juan, St. Thomas, and Great Stirrup Cay or Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios, Nassau, and Grand Stirrup Cay. Each itinerary offers two days at sea.
In Oct. and Nov., The Sky offers 10-day Hawaiian Islands cruises round-trip from Honolulu before returning to Miami to resume the Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings.
Following a 15-day Panama Canal cruise to San Diego, The Sky sails via Seattle to Alaska for a 7-day Inside Passage cruise during the summer. Ports of call include Juneau, Skagway, and Glacier Bay or Sawyer Glacier, Ketchikan, and Victoria.
The Norwegian Sky is a beauty with her sky-blue and sea-blue decor. The main lobby at the base of the skylighted eight-deck atrium gives a sense of calm and elegance in its green and gold array, enhanced with granite, marble, and wood veneer and a large art collection.
At the Pool Deck, the observation lounge has plank floors, rattan chairs, and teal sofas, with parasols lending a tropical island touch.
Horizons is the nicest and quietest of the three dining venues, with banquettes set against walls of burled mahogany veneer punctuated with large windows.
Other dining outlets include the tiled Garden Cafeserving buffets and pizza; Ciao Chow, offering a contemporary Asian menu; Le Bistro, showcasing French fare; and the Trattoria. The Sky is the first NCL ship to offer Freestyle Cruising, allowing passengers more flexibility in terms of when, where, and with whom they dine.
On the International Deck, the Atrium Bar serves champagne, vodka, and caviar in a plush setting with window-walls. The Windjammer Bar is also plush, with mahogany woods and red leather chairs and blue leather sofas set under brass chandeliers. The sports bar has a contemporary club feel, while the cigar bar features an air-purification system.
The show room can seat more than 1000 patrons, but the railings are too high for many viewers and block views at the balcony level. The cabaret looks rather plain in daylight but sparkles at night, and the disco hosts teens until 10 pm, and adults after that. The black and pink casino leads to the shopping gallery, coffee bar, and Internet cafe. The Internet cafe, offering 10 terminals at reasonable fees is a very popular and busy spot onboard ship.
The fitness center is spacious and affords spectacular views as well as spa treatments. The lido area is huge, with two large pools, four whirlpools, a large bar, and an entertainment stage.
258 of the 1000 cabins have balconies. All standard cabins measure about 150 sq ft and are decorated in soft pastels and blond wood furniture. Furnishings include love seats, TVs, desks, modems, dressers, refrigerators, safes, and queen or convertible twin beds.
